It helps if you start right away, at the beginning of the game. Otherwise, it takes a lot longer.
Obviously, you would like to get another 8% of the computer's main company. Then, you can do everything listed below much faster.
Look through the computer's chain of control. For every company that the computer owns less than 51% of the stock, have one of your rich companies buy 51% of the stock of that company.
Next, for all the companies that are within 4 or 5 levels of the start of the computer player's chain of control, have the company that you just acquired control of buy stupid investments. Buy out all profitable companies from its portfolio, sell off all its government bonds, corporate bonds, etc. by transferring them to another company. Generally, investing in D rated companies is a sure way to drop the value of that company drastically.
If the company is more than 5 levels down from the start of the computer player's chain of control, then there is little point in damaging the company. Just take control away from the computer player, and think about having a stool pigeon company do mergers with those lower level companies, so that the computer player winds up with just under 50% of the stool pigeon stock. Kill the stool pigeon at that point.
As the company's value goes down, so will the fortunes of the computer player's company that has stock invested in that company. Your company will also lose value, but since you are richer, you can afford much greater losses. Eventually, the interest charges on the computer player and his companies will exceed the value of the stocks owned in his portfolio, as well as his companies.
At this point, the game gets fun, as the computer player gets hit with margin call after margin call, resulting in less and less control over his companies. You swoop in and take control as you can, and then you further damage him and his companies. Eventually, (MUCH SOONER if you start this right away, usually 6 months from the start of a game), you will rejoice in seeing your opponent eating dust on the street corner somewhere.
Then the game can begin in earnest! Take over all the rest of the companies in the game now that you have no further opposition!
Good luck, and have fun!
